The Doctor's Atonement - Review & Feedback

After a very long wait we've finally released our new Doctor Who story. But did it work?

We have received a small amount of criticism from the movie which is new because normally we get very little or none. This is most likely because our fan base is slowly getting bigger, meaning more people with strong opinions come and go, and we do enjoy getting feedback from the viewers.

The bad things with the movie:

  1. Too Short: A lot of people commented saying they felt the movie was over to quick and would have preferred a longer one. The reason the movie was short is because a lot of our longer videos don't have many views and 25 minutes felt like a good length for a fan film
  2. It was confusing: The big complain was the story didn't make much sense and that's understandable, the movie is tying up a lot of lose ends from Series 2 & 3. If you haven't seen those episodes, then the movie is quite confusing. Also having two doctors, who have the same Tardis and same locations but never meeting can be quite confusing.
  3. The theme song: When it came to making the opening for the movie, we wanted to try something different, so we got in contact with a YouTuber called 'Soundsmyth Productions' and we asked them if we could use a theme they had created. So far the intro hasn't been criticised, just the theme song. A few felt it should be more up beat. The reason for it being a deep pitch is because the movie and the series will go down a much darker route.
  4. Didn't like the regeneration: Towards the end of the movie we see Tom Skinner's Doctor regenerate into Mark Bray's Doctor, we decided to try something different in this movie and we inverted colours and made it glow a bright dark colour. Some people in the comments didn't like this, luckily a regeneration isn't a common thing we do, so if we have any future regenerations, then we will make sure its enjoyable for everyone.
  5. Wasn't very interesting: So the movie didn't have much action, a few fight scenes but no explosions or real threats. We find this a very hard thing to do in fan films, but we will try and find a way around it for future stories. So far Series 4 has a lot more action planned and we hope that it pleases everyone.

The good things with the movie:
  1. Tardis Interior: So a few months ago we released a Tardis Tour video which got a lot of people excited for the movie. Seeing it in an actual story seems to have pleased everyone and so far no one has complained about any inside the Tardis.
  2. Good filming: Quite a few people put in the comments how much they enjoyed the camera angles and focusing. This is good to hear as 'moving image' is one of our strong points. Series 4 will have a lot more camera techniques and we will be using more than one camera to film scenes.
  3. The intro: A lot criticised the theme song but enjoyed the new intro. So far the intro is here to stay and will be used for the Christmas Special and Series 4. The theme song is currently being looked at and might change, but for now the intro stays the same.
  4. The acting: A lot of people praised Samuel Moore's performance as The Doctor, one person commented "Samuel Moore was actually in his best performance in this episode" a lot of people enjoyed the past Doctor and his darker side. Overall acting seemed to be on point.
  5. Cameo Master: For those of you who are long time viewers will know that Ben Durrant played The Master in 2015-16. It was a big shock at the time to find out 'spoilers' that Daniel Jefferson was The Master all along. Seeing Ben return to MB & Homeland after nearly 2 years is a great treat and a lot of people have praised this in the comment section.

Overall the movie received mixed reviews. Some people gave it a 5.5 or 6 out of 10. Others gave it an 8 out of 10. There are some good bits, but also some bad bits which sadly weights the film down a lot. Meaning its an average episode, perhaps leaning towards above average but not great. An overall decent story with some highs and lows.

One Month Later - Doctor Who Series 4 Update

On the 23rd April we uploaded a blog post about Doctor Who Series 4. In the April podcast which was uploaded on the 15th April we discussed the same subject.

Now a month later, what new have we learnt?

The Series will have 7 episodes. Not 9
In our last Doctor Who blog post we said "Series 4 will have 5 to 6 episodes" but we have now decided that we will have 7 episodes and each episode already has a writer.
Adam Burrows, Ben Durrant, Tom Skinner
Mark Bray & Samuel Moore in 2014

Episode 1 & 2 will be written by Tom Skinner, he is replacing Mark Bray as head writer and will open the new Series. Episode 1 and 2 will NOT be a two parter special which we originally said in our last blog post

Episode 3 will be written by Mark Bray. So far Mark has said that his episode will come straight from the heart and will be based on real events in his life with an alien twist.

Episode 4 will be written by Samuel Moore & Graham Bray. Both previous writers but this time paired up. There is no information about the episode yet.

Episode 5 will be written by Tom Ford. This will be his second episode for Doctor Who, his first last year called "The Men of UNIT"

Episode 6 will be written by Colin Bray. His first script for Doctor Who. There is no information about the episode yet.

In our blog post we said that Jordan Crowther-Russell would help write an episode, he has since withdrawn the request and will supervise script development.

Samuel Moore WILL remain as The Doctor
Last month is was uncertain whether Sam would return but we now know that he is happy staying for one more series.
Ben Durrant, Samuel Moore, Colin Bray
& Graham Bray in Series 2

New Companion for the majority of the series
In Series 3 the companion changed nearly every episode unlikely Series 2 in which Ben Durrant played Daniel Jefferson for all episodes apart from one. This actor has been casted!!! but no information as to who they are.

Building Tardis Interior
It will begin the last week of May until the last week for June. Then it will restart the beginning of August until the end.

When will filming begin?
No date is definite yet but we are hoping the 1st July. Booking and renting has already begun and some days are written in stone during July and August.

Future Projects - Information From Presentation 20/06/15

On Saturday 20th June 2015 Mark Bray did a long presentation about current and future projects. Stuff like Doctor Who, Star Wars & Our Own Original Movie. He preformed the presentation to Aaron Hooper, Ben Durrant, Graham Bray, Samuel Moore, Tom Ford & Tom Skinner.

We mainly talking about Future Projects. Mark Bray had a list of about 10 possible movies/series that MB & Homeland could make in the future. He then asked everyone to vote on which one they liked best. Everyone voted for different things. The most voted project was a movie called 'Sacrifice' about Islamic State. This movie would be the first Christian film created by MB & Homeland. We have not yet decided if we are still going to make this movie or not, The name of the film might also change if we do decide to make it.
