The Doctor's Atonement - Review & Feedback

After a very long wait we've finally released our new Doctor Who story. But did it work?

We have received a small amount of criticism from the movie which is new because normally we get very little or none. This is most likely because our fan base is slowly getting bigger, meaning more people with strong opinions come and go, and we do enjoy getting feedback from the viewers.

The bad things with the movie:

  1. Too Short: A lot of people commented saying they felt the movie was over to quick and would have preferred a longer one. The reason the movie was short is because a lot of our longer videos don't have many views and 25 minutes felt like a good length for a fan film
  2. It was confusing: The big complain was the story didn't make much sense and that's understandable, the movie is tying up a lot of lose ends from Series 2 & 3. If you haven't seen those episodes, then the movie is quite confusing. Also having two doctors, who have the same Tardis and same locations but never meeting can be quite confusing.
  3. The theme song: When it came to making the opening for the movie, we wanted to try something different, so we got in contact with a YouTuber called 'Soundsmyth Productions' and we asked them if we could use a theme they had created. So far the intro hasn't been criticised, just the theme song. A few felt it should be more up beat. The reason for it being a deep pitch is because the movie and the series will go down a much darker route.
  4. Didn't like the regeneration: Towards the end of the movie we see Tom Skinner's Doctor regenerate into Mark Bray's Doctor, we decided to try something different in this movie and we inverted colours and made it glow a bright dark colour. Some people in the comments didn't like this, luckily a regeneration isn't a common thing we do, so if we have any future regenerations, then we will make sure its enjoyable for everyone.
  5. Wasn't very interesting: So the movie didn't have much action, a few fight scenes but no explosions or real threats. We find this a very hard thing to do in fan films, but we will try and find a way around it for future stories. So far Series 4 has a lot more action planned and we hope that it pleases everyone.

The good things with the movie:
  1. Tardis Interior: So a few months ago we released a Tardis Tour video which got a lot of people excited for the movie. Seeing it in an actual story seems to have pleased everyone and so far no one has complained about any inside the Tardis.
  2. Good filming: Quite a few people put in the comments how much they enjoyed the camera angles and focusing. This is good to hear as 'moving image' is one of our strong points. Series 4 will have a lot more camera techniques and we will be using more than one camera to film scenes.
  3. The intro: A lot criticised the theme song but enjoyed the new intro. So far the intro is here to stay and will be used for the Christmas Special and Series 4. The theme song is currently being looked at and might change, but for now the intro stays the same.
  4. The acting: A lot of people praised Samuel Moore's performance as The Doctor, one person commented "Samuel Moore was actually in his best performance in this episode" a lot of people enjoyed the past Doctor and his darker side. Overall acting seemed to be on point.
  5. Cameo Master: For those of you who are long time viewers will know that Ben Durrant played The Master in 2015-16. It was a big shock at the time to find out 'spoilers' that Daniel Jefferson was The Master all along. Seeing Ben return to MB & Homeland after nearly 2 years is a great treat and a lot of people have praised this in the comment section.

Overall the movie received mixed reviews. Some people gave it a 5.5 or 6 out of 10. Others gave it an 8 out of 10. There are some good bits, but also some bad bits which sadly weights the film down a lot. Meaning its an average episode, perhaps leaning towards above average but not great. An overall decent story with some highs and lows.
